Florida State Is a 31.5-Point Favorite in Week 0. Has the Market Already Forgiven Mike Norvell?

Florida State opens the 2026 season as a 31.5-point favorite over New Mexico State in Week 0 (Aug. 29). Note the opponent — this is the tune-up, not the Alabama game, which comes Sept. 19. But a four-and-a-half-touchdown number still says something about where the market has landed on Mike Norvell's program after a rough stretch.
What a 31.5 says
Big favorites are the market's way of expressing confidence and a warning at the same time. Laying this many points means trusting two things: that FSU is dramatically better than a Group-of-Five opponent, and that it keeps scoring after the game is decided. The second one is where these bets die — starters get pulled, play-calling goes vanilla, and a 42-10 win misses a 31.5 cover on a backup's kneel-down.
That the number is this high at all suggests the market has extended FSU some benefit of the doubt heading into the year — forgiveness priced in, at least against overmatched competition.
How we'd think about it
There's no lock in a 31.5-point spread, either way. If you believe New Mexico State is simply overmatched, a first-half FSU line or the team total often expresses that more cleanly than laying the full number into garbage-time variance. If you think Norvell's group starts slow — plausible for a Week 0 opener working out kinks — the underdog getting 31.5 is a live number. The real read on FSU comes Sept. 19; this is the market setting the baseline.
