Most Kalshi Users Don't Even Trade — and That Might Be the Whole Strategy

Here's a statistic that reframes the entire prediction-market debate: Kalshi says roughly three-quarters of its users have never deposited funds. They open the app to read the prices, not to trade them.

That sounds like a problem. Kalshi is treating it as a plan.

From exchange to information business

If most of your users want the probabilities rather than a position, you're not really a casino — you're a data company that happens to run an exchange. Kalshi has leaned directly into that read: in February 2026 it partnered with Tradeweb to pipe its market signals into institutional products, APIs and pricing tools, then extended the integration into trading workflows in June. A January survey of market-structure specialists found nearly three-quarters expected prediction-market data to hold real value for institutional investors within a year or two.

Read together, the picture is a platform monetizing attention and signal, not just betting volume.

Why it matters for the fight it's in

This is quietly central to the legal battle prediction markets are fighting. States suing Kalshi argue its sports contracts are wagers. Kalshi's most powerful counter has always been that its markets are information — federally regulated instruments that produce a public probability, not a house line. "Most of our users are here to read prices, not gamble" is not just a growth story; it's a legal argument with a user base attached.

The caveat

None of this means the trading is harmless for the quarter who do it — one analysis pegged ordinary Kalshi users' cumulative losses in the hundreds of millions. An information platform for most users can still be a losing exchange for the ones putting money down. Both things are true, and the second one is the part a bettor should sit with before treating a prediction market as a smarter sportsbook.
