Everyone's Launching Prediction Markets. BetMGM Is Betting It Doesn't Have To.

As DraftKings and FanDuel roll out event-contract products, BetMGM has stayed a pure sportsbook — trimming its 2026 profit outlook while insisting the prediction-market squeeze is temporary.

While its biggest rivals race to bolt on prediction markets, BetMGM is doing something quietly contrarian: nothing. It has stayed a straight sportsbook — and it's paying a short-term price to hold that line.

The divergence

The field is splitting. DraftKings launched Predictions and is advertising it into non-sportsbook states. FanDuel, with CME Group, unveiled a prediction-markets platform slated to launch in December. Event contracts priced like American odds are showing up everywhere, targeting the exact customers sportsbooks depend on.

BetMGM, so far, has not matched them with its own event-contract product. Instead it trimmed its full-year 2026 adjusted-EBITDA outlook to the lower end of its prior $300–350 million range, citing the promotional pressure — while executives publicly framed the disruption as temporary rather than structural.

The bet inside the non-bet

There are two ways to read this. The bullish version: BetMGM is avoiding a legally murky product (the CFTC-vs-states fight is unresolved and getting litigious) and keeping its brand clean while others take regulatory risk. Let the pioneers get sued; move when the law is settled.

The bearish version: prediction markets are a permanent, lower-cost structural competitor, and a sportsbook that doesn't adapt cedes ground it won't easily win back. Some analysts have pointed to sportsbook revenue softness as the clearest sign yet that prediction markets are genuinely eating into the category.

Why it matters

BetMGM is effectively the control group in the industry's biggest experiment. If prediction markets are a fad or get regulated into a box, its patience looks smart and cheap. If they're the future, it's the operator with the most ground to make up. Watching whether BetMGM eventually caves and launches its own event contracts will be one of the clearest tells on where this whole thing is heading.
