The Sweep, October 18 — A Punter's Extra Point, a Conference's Apology at 1 a.m., and 1,600 Survivor Entries That Died Before the Late Window

The Rams lost to a kicker who went six-for-six. The Colts lost to a team that had not won. The Eagles lost a fourth straight with Tanner McKee. The Big 12 said its replay crew took a second off the clock in Provo. The Rays took a 3-2 lead to Florida. Plus a 2017 highlight reel labelled Week 7, a 2021 Louisiana board meeting that a search served as this week's, and a Bloomberg report we could not read.

Sunday, October 18 — the Rams lost to a kicker and a punter. Arizona 18, Los Angeles 16 at SoFi Stadium, on Chad Ryland's sixth field goal of the day, a 43-yarder as time expired, after the Rams had taken a 16-15 lead with 47 seconds left on a Matthew Stafford throw to Colby Parkinson and an extra point kicked by their punter, Ethan Evans, because kicker Blake Grupe hurt his knee making a tackle on a first-quarter kickoff. The Rams came in leading the league in total offence and gained 286 yards; they turned it over twice in Arizona territory in the fourth quarter and gave the Cardinals 15 yards of their final drive with a Josh Wallace penalty. Los Angeles was a 12.5-point favourite at DraftKings on Friday with 84 percent of the money on Arizona. Our betting piece is about what that number did to 901 Circa Survivor entries. The judgment: a team that lets its kicker tackle has already lost control of its afternoon.

Sunday, October 18 — the Colts were booed off their own field by a team that was 0-5. Tennessee 26, Indianapolis 20. The Colts led 13-0 at the half and had out-gained the Titans 232 yards to 64; then Jeffery Simmons stripped Jonathan Taylor on the first snap of the third quarter, Chimere Dike returned a punt 58 yards, Oluwafemi Oladejo ran a blocked punt back for the lead, and Joey Slye kicked from 49 and 44 in the last two minutes. Daniel Jones threw two interceptions, both ending scoring chances. Robert Saleh has his first win as Tennessee's coach. The Colts were 6.5-point favourites and are 2-4. Another 703 survivor entries went with them.

ESPN on the final moments of BYU 28, Notre Dame 24 in Provo, October 17 — including the play the Big 12 now says should not have been the last.

Sunday, October 18 — Philadelphia has lost four straight for the first time since 2020. Carolina 25, Eagles 14, with Tanner McKee making his third career start and his first without a playoff berth already clinched: 26 of 45 for 215 yards and a touchdown, sacked for 11 on the first snap. Bryce Young threw for 281 and two scores to Tommy Tremble, who celebrated the second with a pantomime knockout. Saquon Barkley missed a second straight game, and his two backups were out too. The line opened Eagles -1.5 at the start of the week, reopened around a pick after the Hurts news, and closed Carolina -3.5, per Covers; at DraftKings, 60 percent of bets were on Carolina and 75 percent of the money on Philadelphia. The money was wrong this time. The judgment: the Eagles are 2-4 with a quarterback on injured reserve, and the schedule does not care that they won a Super Bowl two seasons ago.

Sunday, October 18, 1:56 a.m. Mountain — a conference said sorry in a statement. The Big 12 reviewed the final play of BYU 28, Notre Dame 24 and "determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew." One second, per Deseret News and Sports Illustrated; NBC's Terry McAulay says the bug clock showed :01 and replay should have checked the stadium clock. Notre Dame would have had one more snap from the 8. Kalani Sitake said the second did not matter because "it was fourth down." It was first down. Our CFB piece is about why the second changed nothing for spread bettors, everything for moneyline bettors at -400, and why the futures market punished Notre Dame three times as hard as Georgia for losing on the same afternoon.

Sunday, October 18 — the Rays took a 3-2 lead home. Tampa Bay 3, Cleveland 1 in Game 5 at Progressive Field. Drew Rasmussen went seven innings on 95 pitches; Parker Messick went two on 57. Cleveland's three best relievers, held back from Saturday's 7-3 bullpen-game loss, threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings in a game the lineup could not win with five hits. Bryan Baker converted his 35th straight save chance. Game 6 is Monday at 8 p.m. ET in St. Petersburg. Our MLB piece is about whether Stephen Vogt's sequencing was the problem or the alibi.

Saturday, October 17 — five of the top eight lost, which had never happened. Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama and Texas, per Sportradar via the AP, plus No. 13 Missouri (31-3 at Ole Miss), No. 16 Mississippi State (31-0 at LSU) and No. 18 Oklahoma State (35-32 at Houston). Miami needed overtime, twice, to beat an unranked Florida State 43-35 and woke up Sunday as Kalshi's national-title favourite at 17 percent, per Covers. Polymarket disagreed: at 7:30 Sunday evening its market had Ohio State at 16.5, Georgia at 16.35 and Miami at 15.95. Two exchanges, three favourites, one weekend. The judgment: when the two largest prediction markets in the country cannot agree on who is favoured, neither of them is telling you much beyond the fact that nobody knows.

Thursday, October 15 — Shane Hennen pleaded guilty, soberly. The 41-year-old prosecutors call a "fixer" pleaded guilty in Philadelphia federal court to bribery, wire fraud and money laundering, per Covers, admitting to bribing Chinese Basketball Association players from 2022 and NCAA players across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons to underperform so their teams would miss the spread, then betting on it. He is separately charged in the Eastern District of New York in the cases built around Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier, and in the organised-crime poker case that names Chauncey Billups; those are pending. Sentencing is February 25, 2027. A day earlier the trainer Jalen Smith got six years in the college point-shaving case. No punchline.

Thursday, October 15 — a 24-year ban. The International Tennis Integrity Agency suspended Stefan Milićević of Serbia until October 8, 2050, and fined him $70,000, for fixing six matches between 2022 and 2024, five of them his own, attempting to fix six more, and recruiting other players into the network. He did not cooperate with the investigation. Twenty-four years is longer than he has been alive as a professional, which is the point of it.

Wednesday, October 14 — Kalshi's chief executive described the stakes. Tarek Mansour, at DC Fintech Week in Arlington, told CoinDesk that the fight with the states is over "whether prediction markets exist in the U.S. or whether they go offshore," and that he expects to win at the Supreme Court. The day after, Louisiana's Gaming Control Board gave DraftKings four months instead of five years and attached a monthly report on "prediction market products" to the sportsbook licence. Offshore is one way to leave a state's jurisdiction. Running a licensed sportsbook in it is the opposite.

What we are not running, and why

Polymarket's IPO and token. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, per The Paypers and others, that Polymarket is weighing a public listing and a native token. We could not read the Bloomberg story, and the company's own line is that it "has not announced any plans for an airdrop or a token generation event." A report about a company considering two things, read second-hand, is not an item.

A 2017 highlight reel titled "Week 7." The first NFL channel result for Sunday's Cardinals-Rams game was a "Week 7 Game Highlights" upload from October 22, 2017. Several YouTube titles for today's games say Week 7; today is Week 6, and the Thursday game our October 16 piece covered was Week 6 too. The clip we embedded was uploaded this afternoon.

A 2021 Louisiana board meeting. A search for video of Thursday's Gaming Control Board hearing returned a Louisiana First News clip of a board meeting on sports betting, uploaded October 21, 2021. The Louisiana piece runs with a Maine station's October 1 report on regulators and sportsbook AI instead, captioned with its date.

The Colts as 11.5-point favourites. One account of Sunday's survivor carnage had the Colts favoured by 11.5. DraftKings' number on ESPN was 6.5 and Sports Illustrated's preview had 7. We printed 6.5 and 7.

2022 odds for a 2026 game. A search for the Colts-Titans line returned four FanDuel and Fox Sports previews from October 2022, when Tennessee hosted and was favoured. Every line in this edition is from a page dated this week.

Circa's own counters. Circa's contest page showed 5,972 Survivor entries and 24 Grandissimo entries "remaining" on Sunday evening. Covers' reporting had 2,908 and 15 entering the week. The page is not being updated; we used the prize pools from it and nothing else.

Kalshi's title prices. Kalshi's public API did not return its college football championship series under the ticker we tried, so every Kalshi price in this edition is Covers' Sunday-morning reading, attributed as such. Polymarket's prices came from its own API at the time stated.

Texas's lieutenant governor trailing in a poll. A University of Texas poll has Dan Patrick, the state's most prominent opponent of legal sports betting, at 46 to Vikki Goodwin's 49, inside the margin. It is a political poll in a political race, and the betting angle is two steps removed. Not ours.

Pages we could not open. SBC Americas returned 403. Sportico redirected to a paywall host that does not resolve. AP's own site and the New York Times are blocked to our tools, so the Times' DraftKings reporting is cited through the Electronic Frontier Foundation's summary and the Louisiana hearing coverage. WKYC, Bleacher Report and Yahoo's live blog timed out; CasinoBeats' Sunday story on Massachusetts was blocked on a second attempt. The AP's five-of-the-top-8 story was read through ESPN's syndication.
